The team of Karikalan is now on the brim of facing a controversy. Rajasekaran, also known as Nagaraj, a 41-yearold, music composer for TV serials, filed a complaint with the police a few days ago claiming that the script of the Vikram-starrer was allegedly his.
According to a source, “He had registered the story as per the law and approached production houses with the script to make it into a film. He says that his idea has been adapted by the Karikalan team without his knowledge. He wants legal action to be taken against the team if proven guilty.”S S Vasan, producer of Karikalan, says, “It was rather surprising when we heard that a complaint was lodged. Although, we haven’t been intimated about the issue by anyone as of yet, we are ready to give answers if required.”
Vasan goes on to add, “History cannot be copyrighted. Take the case of Gandhi, for instance. No one can say that his life story belongs to them. There are many stories that have been made on the freedom fighter and each one has its own take.”
Vasan further says that none of these issues will actually affect the filming of Karikalan. “We have registered the title and the story legally in at least three places, leaving no loopholes. While the title has been registered with the Guild and Producers Council of South India, the script has been registered with the South Indian Writers Association and even the Writers Guild of America.”
LI Kannan, director of Karikalan, says, “I have consulted directors like Gandhi Krishna, who have faced similar issues in the past. Rajasekaran does not belong to my script team. Why should we give him any credit?” Karikalan is a period-cum-contemporary drama, based on the history of Karikala Chozhan, who was one of the great Tamil kings of Chola dynasty during the Sangam period. The film has Chiyaan Vikram, Anjali and Zarine Khan.
